Test Changes Made

After the 1st Test Dog Ran, a few changes were made to the test as follows ...

For Test 1, the gunners are now throwing the bird across the ditch instead of into it. So that the bird now lands on the near side towards the mat.

For the Blind, the marker was built up to be more obvious to the handlers to see from the mat

First test dog up was Gauge and handler Julie Cole ... Gauge came to the line at 6:35 am

Flyer (F) - Down the hill - ran the mowed strip of grass and went directly to the bird.

Left Retired (LR) -  *bird lands just beyond the channel on dry land*
Dog went out and around the water to the right - wide right going out to the far trees - turned back in and missed it - hunted very deep and wide right- dog was handled back in to the area. Had a hard hunt but got it.

Blind (B) - Out into the 1st piece of water - over the tip of the point - 1st whistle beyond the point - 2 more to get out of the water - quite a few whistles and he got deep to where the blind planter is - several more whistles brought him back to the brush and the bird.

This took 11.5 minutes to complete

Flyer (F) - Straight to the fall area and her bird.

Left Retired (LR) - Down the hill and across the water - across the field - across the ditch and hunted deep left - stayed deep and worked it out until she got her bird

Blind (B) - Down the hill and had her 1st whistle to get past the point - 2 more to cross the channel - 1 at the bird.

This took 7.5 minutes to complete


This test is taking approximately 7-11 minutes per dog to complete.

1st & 2nd Series Test Description - Land Double and a Land Blind

1st and 2nd Series Test Description

Welcome to the first test of the 2026 National Amateur Retriever Championship!

82 dog/handler teams will start this morning, after having traveled from all over the US to compete here in Junction City, Oregon.

Land Double and Land Blind
This test uses a hen pheasant and rooster pheasant for the land marks and a hen pheasant for the land blind.

Test 1 finds us sitting on the side of a hill facing South. There is a broad grass field just below us with a narrow winding pond.

Bird # 1 (LR) is a Hen Pheasant. This gun station is located to the left of the mat. The line is down the hill, across a narrow corner of the pond, over a large piece of land and then back across another channel of water. The gunner shoots and then throws their hen from left to right, landing approximately 165 yards from the line across the ditch, so it lands on the near side towards the line. The gunners then retire when the dog is sent. We will refer to this bird as LR for Left Retired.

Bird # 2 (F) is a Rooster Pheasant Flyer. Three gunners and a thrower are located to the handlers right and will throw and then shoot this bird to the right. The dog will travel down a short hill across a grassy field to locate this rooster, which lands approximately 170 yards from the mat. We will refer to this bird as F for Flyer.

Test 2 is a Blind.
Bird # 3 (B) is a Hen Pheasant located to the left of the mat and parallel to bird 1 in test 1. The line out to this bird will bring the dog down the hill, across a finger of the pond, over a point where they will re-enter the channel, make their way across the water and then out and across the field. They will cross a road on their way to the brush pile and find the bird. The bird is planted 210 yards from the mat. The bird planter will retire behind a mound. We will refer to this bird as B for Blind.

These 2 combined tests will take approximately 8-10 minutes per dog to complete.

Good Morning - Day 1

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome to the 2026 National Amateur Retriever Championship! 

This morning we are kicking off the event at the 1st and 2nd series test location at Josh and Amy Carter Property here in Junction City, Oregon. We have heard the National Anthem, test dogs preparing to run and then we will be ready to begin our first series and get this event rolling! 

This morning has started out clear with temps currently at 53 degrees. Temps are expected to get up around 88 degrees by later today with clear and sunny skies to persist this afternoon. We will update you with changing conditions as the day goes on of course! For now, stay tuned as we prepare to begin the 69th National Amateur Retriever Championship!

2026 NARC Annual Meeting

Friday, June 12th at 3:00 pm (PST) – Junction City, Oregon

Meeting was officially called to order at 3:00 pm by Sonya Harrigfeld-Jackson. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and then we had a moment of silence.

A Welcome and introduction of Officers was given

Quorum was reached. No need for roll call. The minutes of the previous Annual Meeting were published online by Retriever News and made available to membership. Previous Minutes approved.


Kyle gave financials for the NARC club. Charitable donations are down because a check was written a little late, but it will show up next year. Key points:

Assets: $331,139
Liabilities: $6,655
Members' Equity: $324,484
Increase in Equity: $4,016
Cash and CDs: $310,139

Club remains financially sound despite increased field trial expenses.

Motion to accept the financial statements as presented. Approved.

Next business was New Clubs – Membership applications from the Yooper Retriever Club of Michigan and the Wind River Retriever Club of Wyoming.

The Board has reviewed these applications and recommends their acceptance into the National Amateur Retriever Club. Motion to accept. Approved.

Julie Cole and Charlene & Chester Koeth were recognized with the Trial Dedication.

Dr. Wayne Jensen of the AKC Canine Health Foundation: 80 million in grants over the past 30 years. Between 2020-2025 every year 3.2 million new grants funded residency programs for dogs.
Funded with donations from clubs and individuals 2020-2025 there was 4.4 million
From retriever related organizations there was 3.1 million. Spread the word to raise more money for CHF to help fund research!

Sara Shull - Retrievers Forever Foundation. Donations - Randy Spangler encouraged them to get a tax # for tax deductible donations. They help clubs, supplement Canine Health for Retrievers, Grounds, Facilities, Improvements of Grounds and so much more!

AKC Representative Russ Reavis will be here at the NARC all week. The number of events has pretty much stayed the same year over year.

Trial Procedures Given:

• 1st 25 to View the Line and then the next 25 -  then the balance. Bibs are required.
• Quiet in the field and the gallery is requested. No distractions.
• 2 Test Dogs will run, then 20 running dogs, 1st Gun Change
• 22 Running Dogs and then a Gun Change from there out. 

 Trial instructions were given for no birds: 
            • first no bird wait 6 dogs and you will be 7^th to run. 
            • 2^nd no bird wait 6 dogs you’ll be the 7^th to run
            • 3^rd no bird you move to the end.

3 Live gunners & 1 thrower at Pheasant Station
2 Live gunners & 1 thrower for Ducks

• Dogs on the mat for blinds. Handler on the mat for marks.
• Creeping - if excessive reheel.
• Only Judges and Head Marshal under the Judges tent
• 3 Holding blinds - 5 if there is a quick blind
• Callbacks will be given on the blog
• There will be shade and pools before and after the dogs run
• If there is and extended hunt and a dog appears distressed - handlers will be asked to pick-up
• Vet will help decide if we need to stop for the day due to heat.

A couple items from different time zones to be addressed.

Monte took the podium:

A trial in Oklahoma threw 2 poison birds - ran the blind through the middle, came back and only picked up 1 bird.

1. Becomes illegitimate if the gun in the field with the bird is not picked up. It is a marking test and you can not do that with a gun you do not pick up.

If a test is scrapped, who should the next running dog be?

1. If the new test starts the next day, you go back to the start dog.

2. If the new test starts that same day - it should be the next running # or who is in the holding blind if the next dog is at another stake, etc. (it should be the next available dog in running order)

This National Event will be held June 13-20, 2026, in Junction City, Oregon. This year marks the 69th Annual National Amateur Retriever Championship. The dogs and handlers competing in this premier event are the very best in the world of Amateur handled performance retrievers! Congratulations to all those Qualified for this National event, and best of luck to those hoping to qualify still!

 Junction City, Oregon is a charming semi-rural community at the northern end of "Wine Country" with beautiful scenery and landscapes all around. This area is known for its Scandinavian festivals and heritage, some great wine tasting and is a treasure trove of charming small town fun. It features a friendly farm town atmosphere, with plenty to do and see while you're here! There is easy access to the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, wine country, several National Forests, Crater Lake National Park and much more! We'll see you there!
